KAO SOFCARE® GP-1(INCI: PPG-3 Caprylyl Ether) is derived from natural fatty oils and is 100% nonionic active ingredient. This product provides silicone-like sensing and can partially or completely replace amodimethicones and dimethicones in hair care formulations.
KAO SOFCARE® GP-1 is easily incorporated into shampoo formulations without the need for polymer stabilization. It is thus possible to obtain transparent shampoos, in which, in addition to an excellent conditioning effect, it exhibits good thickening and foam-stabilizing properties.
A distinctive feature of KAO Sofcare® GP-1 from traditional cationic conditioners provides superior absorption throughout the length of the hair resulting in softness from root to tip and ease of styling. When combined with silicones, the product improves their adsorption on the surface of the hair and allows you to reduce the amount of silicone by ¾ without losing the conditioning effect. Another important parameter is the volume of hair. As you know, often in pursuit of improving combing, the developer receives a product that makes hair heavier and reduces volume. As can be seen in fig. 1, adding KAO Sofcare® GP-1 increases hair volume compared to shampoo where only high viscosity dimethicone is used.
When it comes to using this ingredient in hair conditioners, all of the above is about excellent volume and conditioning properties, with partial or complete replacement of silicones in the formulation, also confirmed by comparative tests. I would like to note the magnificent shine that KAO Sofcare provides® GP-1 with enough low working concentrations (0.5 – 1.0%) (Fig. 2). In addition, the unique hydrophobic properties of this conditioning agent improve hair manageability, make styling easier and manage unruly “fluffy” ends even in high humidity.
Recommended concentrations of KAO SOFCARE® GP-1: 0.3 – 1.0%.
